The Nigeria media has been describe has the  best in African in news content, design and publication.

This was disclosed by Wale Aboderin, Chairman, Punch Newspaper while speaking on the topic" Media Role in National Integration and National Development"  during the 5th Annual Conference on National Advocacy and Development of Citizens Rights And Empowerment Advocacy Initiative (CREMA)  held on the 2nd of October, 2015 in Oregun Lagos.

The Chairman who was represented by Mrs.  Olabisi Deji Folutile (Editor, Saturday Punch) reiterated that Nigeria media has a robust identity in terms of news content, reportage, design and online publication compare to other African Nations.

Giving the background of how media came into being in Nigeria by Sir. Henry Townsend to the present age, Aboderin reaffirmed that the media has been playing a key role in National Development serving as a vehicle to fight the colonial masters and the transition of the military rule into the present democratic dispensation. In his words, " the media and newspaper has continue to play a pragmatic role in the society toward the citizens and the government,  and the media terrain in Nigeria has never been a dull moment.

"The role of media in National Integration cannot be over-emphasised in terms of providing information, educating the public and entertainment. Media can make the society to understand the need for development and persuade them towards a positive direction."

The Chairman stated further that the media promote social justice by analysing issues and facts in line with social justice, the media help to expose corruption and inform the public on plans and actions of the government, review, analyse and profer solutions to societal issues where necessary and put government officials on their toes.

On integration, Aboderin explained that Nigeria is a nation of nations having over 250 ethnic groups and the media has helped to unity all these ethnic groups together regardless of the cultural differences by playing up issues that bind the people together and negating issues that can cause national integration.

However, the Chairman enumerated the challenges facing the media and media practitioners in the country and include: the problem of financial inducement of journalists and practitioners, lack of poor remuneration of the practitioners which may compel the journalists to succumb to the brown envelope syndrome, interest of media owners clashing with d interest of the management, media practitioner snot observing the code of ethics of the profession.

Aboderin seize the opportunity to media practitioners to ensure encourage unbiased and objective reports of their stories.

In the same vein, the General Secretary of Christian Association of Nigeria(CAN), Lagos State Chapter, Elder Israel Akindewo while speaking on the topic titled " The Media; Maximising its Potency for National Growth" charged the citizens to have the right attitude toward the Nation because no nation can operate in a vacuum a  nation depends on individual behaviour towards it. According to him, " a nation relies on the faithfulness, beliefs system, family, standard of education, behaviour pattern of its people and d media for its survival.

" Great nations focus on the collective efforts and talks of the people, the unity of the people and the individual must know their roles for a country to be recognised."

The clergyman praised the efforts of the media in championing the course they believe in despite the unpalatable situation in the country especially during the military dispensation. In his words, " the media may be operating in an environment that is not palatable particularly during the military era, as the forth estate of the realm, they are key to national development of any nation" Akindawo said.

He admonished journalists to be factual and objective in their reporting, reaffirming that non-professional journalists have done a lot of damage to the profession and every effort efforts must be made to get rid of the bad eggs in the discipline.

On his own part, Senator Ben Murray Bruce represented by Judith Osinaike of Ben Bruce foundation, reiterated that the media is one of the most vibrant industries in the country and called for maximum sanity in the profession especially with the advent of the information technology. According to the Senator, the media is key to the control which can serve as tool for unity or division.

The Legislator charges the journalists to be poised as an agenda setter and gatekeeper instead of being a source propaganda or sensational media.

In his remark, the convener and  president of CREMA, Rexkennedy Saltlove disclosed that the Non- governmental Agency (NGO)) is built on four cardinal points which are: Education, Right Advocacy, Health and Economic Empowerment. He reiterated that the NGO is meant to ensure that there is accountability on the part of government and every government officials and protect the rights of every individual in the society.
