Journalists
have been charged to engage on more research into gender reporting.
Mr. Soji
Omotunde, General Manager {Training & Development} made this call when
members of Journalists For Christ {JFC} paid a courtesy visit to him at The
Nation Newspaper on Thursday.
Mr.
Gbenga Osinaike, Project Coordinator, JFC disclosed that the purpose of the
visit is to present some copies of the book, Mainstream Gender Reporting on
Affirmative Action of Women And Girls Rights Issues which was published by JFC.
Osinaike
reiterated further that the purpose of the book is to understand how
journalists covers issues relating to women and girls in the society citing six
Newspapers in the country and to change the way and manner news are being
reported especially as they have to do with female folks.
In her
own view, Jacqueline Ogoh submitted that media sensitization and reportage of
women and girl child is not balanced. She
claimed that more attention is being given to the rich women in the society
while the poor and less privileged are being sidelined.
Ogoh is
of the opinion that intensive investigation need to be done especially on cases
of rape, assault and crime among others especially as they relate to female
gender.
Mrs. Patience
Saduwa, revealed that cultural and environmental factors contributes to
ineffectiveness of female reportage. This pointed out that most women are not
ready to open up due to some cultural and environmental factors.
However,
Ogoh encouraged that there is a need to educate and orientate the female gender
on the importance of their voice in fighting gender imbalance in the country.
Omotunde
concluded that women are created out of men and they should not see themselves
as equal or superior to the men.
